Wana Yook

Wana Yook

In the heart of Bangkok at Victory Monument’s 515 Victory hotel, discreetly located at the end of a candlelit cobblestone pathway, one stumbles on  a beautiful  pastel  yellow coloured historical house, the Wana Yook restaurant hosted by Michelin Chef Chalee Kader. The inspiration of this house and its decor dates back over a century ago, in what is called the Sino-Portuguese style. For generations to generations, this style has been used throughout architectural buildings in Thailand for Royal families, Governors, and important facilities.

When implementing the lighting design for the house,  Matteo Messervy did not solely consider the architectural character of the site. Curiosity and exploration is his main driver. He consistently begins by the history of the location and the diverse influences that shaped its character through the course of time.

At night, the luminous reflection emulates the timelessness and warm glow of candlelight. Both on the facade and inside the premises. Its peculiar reflections on the architecture and interior design causes a distortion of  the geometry, objects and volumes that creates a dreamlike-time travel atmosphere and  a feeling of rhythmic weightlessness.

Matteo Messervy  aims to highlight the image and originality of the site as a whole, but also the identity of each of its parts. Attract and appeal to the guests, so that they leave with an after-taste of well-being, far from the daily stress, and with a desire to return. Like a peaceful  haven.

Inside, Messervy contributed to the interior design with an elegant and laid-back touch inspired by Thai cultural arts&crafts merged  with modern art from the early 70's. The artist brought custom designed bamboo weaved soft-shaped  luminaires to complement the decor comprising elegant and antique thai fittings from the early 20th century. Inside this lavish structure, two-floor Wana Yook exudes a sense of elegance, with antique furnishings, stained glass panels, chairs draped in Jim Thompson fabric, and an impressive art collection belonging to one of the owners.
